Any scholars out there?
I have been looking at some volumes entitled "Historical Society of West Wales
Transactions - West Wales Historical Records"
in which there are tables of information called the "Pembrokeshire Hearths in
1670". They seem to contain two categories organised by Parish. The categories are
"Persons lyable" and "Paupers". Persons are listed by name with a
number listed alongside, typically between 1 and 7.
Just what have I been looking at? I cannot find a satisfactory explanation of the word
"Hearth" in this context even in very old dictionaries.
