Hi Listers All,
My contribution to the lists for the festive season is a poem I wrote two
years ago after the normal deluge of family this house expects on Boxing Day.
I feel it is in keeping with the lists' purpose, as it names my grandchildren.
My intention is to put a copy in all their files of family history when I make
them. I also wish to extend to everyone A Nadolig Llawen ac A Blwyddyn Newydd
Dda from the Rhondda Valleys.
GLAD IT'S ALL OVER THIS YEAR
They all come to my house on Boxing Day to see me, and for the dinner I serve.
Six children eying the presents
"Oh! Look what Darren's got."
Dale's head stuck into his hand-held,
And Elyn's grabbing all the dolls.
The baby Angharad is ripping at wrappers.
Darren's Mam Nicola's shouting at him
"Darren, stip running around."
Bethan, the thin one, cavorts like a model.
Round Rachel is just running wild.
I baste the tukey, warm the tureens,
Peel potatoes, ready to roast.
Chop the carots into small cubes
Slice the stalks off the sprouts.
Cut the cauliflower into florets.
Open a can of corn.
Parcel sausages in strips of bacon.
Scrape new potatoes to boil.
Gather the chairs round the table, one short
Gran's got to use an armchair.
Linda, cigarette in athritic fingers, strikes a match
Crackers are pulled amid scrames of delight
John refuses the sprouts
Tall glasses filling with wine, hands closing around the stems.
The jokes die a death mid the groans.
Dinner is over, the stragglers remain.
Darren and Rachel are last.
We clear the table, the chairs are pushed back
Angharad asleep, curled up on the couch
The dishes are washed. Not by me, Not by me.
I've done my bit. I cop out.
Linda and Nicola escape from the house
And I'm left alone with the kids.
Diversion is needed, I blow up balloons
Til the room is festooned with the lot
They are chased round until all have gone pop.
An hour has gone and at least I have tasted
Some freedom from what they must do.
Time for a snack. The two mother's come back
Time for a ride in the car
They've packed all the gear and go.
I make some hot coffee, sit back on the couch
Take a deep breath......
I'm glad it's all over this year
Best wishes and have a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful and rewarding New
