Merry Christmas Mike,
Do I have a present for you! Your ancestor, Titus Davis, traveled to
the US in the ship Amazon, one of the most famous packets of its day. He
and his family joined a company of over 800 Mormons in London who emigrated
together. They left on June 4, 1863 and arrived on July 18, 1863 in New
York. They landed at Castle Gardens and were processed there prior to
beginning their overland journey across the plains in an ox-cart. On this
ship was the entire membership of the Cardiff Brass Band who also emigrated
together! Titus was listed a head of household and all his family members
are listed, wife and four children. The trip took 28 days (very fast
passage) and ran into no trouble.
This voyage is quite famous as Charles Dickens visited the Amazon prior
to its departure and wrote about the people on the ship. An abstract of
his work about these people is posted on the net and I can get you the URL
address later today so you can read all about them.
There is a lot more information, this is just a quick over-view as I am
home for lunch. I will send names, where to get pictures of the ship,
passenger lists, info. on Castle Gardens, etc. to your personal email
address - but I wanted to post this in case someone else on the list is
interested in a Look-Up.
