It is not easy unfortunately, there were no central records in Germany then,
while civil registration only started in the 1870s. You might benefit from
joining the anglo-german family history society, they have a lot of
practical information as well as some records of German immigrants to
England. Their website is www.agfhs.org.uk
. If your ancestor had an unusual
name then you could get a listing from the telephone company, see where they
might be clustered, and write to the people there today. This worked for me
but it cost quite a lot in postage.
