You state that you are suprised that you cannot find any babtisms on the IGI.
I would point out that Non-Conformists in Pembrokeshire were in the overwhelming majority
(The total varied from Parish to Parish and Area to Area) but I would suggest that if you
look at the "Religious Census" information posted by Gareth on Genuki, you will
find confirmation of this.
The Non-Conformist records are for many Chapels non-existant. One should however bear in
mind, that some of the records that have survived are personal records of individual
ministers. While the register may be catalogued under a particular chapel, these often
contain records of babtisms for a much wider area.
As an example, the "Capel y Graig" Trelech baptism records, contain baptisms
performed by Morgan Jones in Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, Glamorganshire and
It is therefore important, to try and trace the religious affiliations of your ancestors,
and the history of the ministry of any chapel they were associated with.
If they were "Damned Baptists" the changes are, there are no records, as they
did not believe in infant baptism.
In such a case, you soon come to a dead end.
If however you research the extended family, siblings etc., you may find as I did in a
census, a great grandmother living with a second cousin. Her name and parish of birth
enabled me to connect to a series of Wills back to the 1600's.
There are no guarantees, but nothing ventured nothing gained.

Once again Lynne, I have to thank you for your invaluable advice.
Mind you, I think at the moment there are a few too many rocks, and I am
probably stymied until Thomas's marriage certificate comes through.
Using the IGI batch numbers, I have now checked every parish within a 10
mile radius of Burton, bearing in mind that in those days the only means of
transport would have been walking, and have found a few Thomas Evans, but of
course without his father's name, I cannot narrow down my search. What I do
find surprising though is that I cannot find any records for the baptisms of
the children of Thomas and his wife Jane.
No doubt all will be revealed in the passage of time.
