I am a bit late sending my two pence worth.
This was written about my ancestor Thomas Jones born 1812 in the book by
F.J. Pedlar called History of the Hamlet of Gellideg in Merthyr Tydfil.
'Thomas Jones was a miner and a carpenter his wife Cecilia Jones was a
midwife and Thomas worked as a collier and a fireman at the level known as
the 'Forty Colliers'.
Thomas was definitely a fireman underground. Hope this helps

Thanks to all for very enlightening response to my query on the term
fireman in relation to a colliery worker. In my case Pat was probably
nearest the mark since I have possible supportive evidence that my gggfather
colliery worker on census returns. Its the usual problem of proving that
the man on the marriage cert is the one on the census!
