Yes, times have changed. We Catholics go to work and children attending
Catholic school attend on All Saints Day unlike when I was a student.
What is most interesting for our family is that our 10 year old grandson
was the "grim reaper" for today's Halloween trick or treat and tomorrow we
will be attending Mass to watch him march in procession into church with
the other students. He has chosen to dress as his namesake.. St. John the
I think this is the best of both worlds. ( although all this costuming
A blessed All Saints Day to all.

Fest-Allerheiligen, or known as Halloween.
November 1st,- the Catholic Calendar referred to it as,
The "Evangelist Calendar", calls it "Gedenktag der Heilligen."
What is Halloween? - An evening put aside for children and some adults to
themselves as different Saints?
All Saint's Day,- has been in practise since 609 (C.E.). It's a Christian
observed by many Western churches on November 1. The day now honors all
the church, even those not known by name.
The first All Saint's Day occurred, when Pope Boniface IVm accepted the
Pantheon as a gift from the Emperor Phocas. Boniface dedicated it as the
Church of Sanata Maria Rotonda in honor of the Blessed Virgin and all
martyrs. During Pope Gregory III's reign (731-741) the festival was expanded
to include all the saints and a chapel in St. Peter's church was dedicated
accordingly. Pope Gregory, officially designated the day in 837.
Roman Catholics are required to attend Mass and to refrain from
work on this day.
(But time has changed.)
Allerseelen - All Soul's Day
In the Catholic Calder it's known as "Allerseelen"
In the Evangelist Calendar it's known as "Johann Albrecht Bengel 1762.
All Soul's Day - is a Roman Catholic day commemorating the faithful
those baptized Christian believed to be in purgatory. It is
celebrated on November 2, unless this date falls on a Sunday. When this
happens, All Soul's Day is celebrated on November 3.
Odilo, abbot of Cluny, established All Souls' Day in the eleventh century.
day purposely follows "All Saints' Day" in order to shift the focus from
those in heaven to those in purgatory.
On this day, three requiem Masses are celebrated: one for the celebrant,
the departed, and one for the pope.
The Church of England abolished All Soul's Day during the Reformation.
the day has been re-established in Anglo-Catholic churches.
On the eve, "All Souls' Day", the graves in the cemeteries would be
covered with burning candles, while the people prayed for their departed.
