Here is an entry from page 348 of the Ernsthausen familybook. I have written Sebastian,
because Johann is incorrect. My mother’s great grandparents were Sebastian Holz and
Magdalena Keks - who we now know were not married.
Their daughter Susanna was my mother’s grandmother. She married Johann Hilger, and he
died after the birth of their first child and Susanna married again to my mother’s
grandfather. Here is her baptismal certificate, so you can see why I adjusted the entry
My request for help is that we still don’t know anything about Magdalena Keks - what
village she came from, who her parents were, when she was born and when she died. I was
told that unwed mothers left their villages and went to a neighbouring village to have
their baby. In this case, Magdalena Keks stayed in the same house as Sebastian’s
(Susanna’s father) first cousin’s two daughters.
If anyone has any idea or information about this Magdalena Keks, I would really appreciate
it. I’m assuming she was born around the same time as Sebastian - he was born in 1863.
One other maybe helpful piece,or not, of information. Supposedly, Sebastian Holz and
Magdalena Keks had a son named Sebastian together born 19 Nov 1894 and I can find no
record of his birth at all. He did exist though. Maybe by then, Sebastian and Magdalena
had married or maybe Sebastian (1894) is really born to Elizabeth Neuses who Sebastian
(1863) later married.
I hope this all makes sense. Thank you for any help.
Here is a photo of Susanna and her brother Sebastian before coming to Canada. We are not
sure who the woman in the middle is - maybe a grandmother.
