The initial thumbs up has been given for a family history weekend to be held at the Cliffden Hotel in Teignmouth, South Devon. The hotel is run by Action for Blind People. The date has not been set yet, but I can tell you if the plans are completed, that it will be sometime during 2008 and will be added to the hotel's list of themed breaks for the blind. This is the first time that a family history themed break will have been included, and there is a great feeling of excitement about it already. It is thought that the break will be over a weekend, for example, arrive on Friday, have two days of family history related events and talks etc, and then depart for home on the Monday. If its a success, a longer break could be arranged in the future.
Please note that this break is specifically being arranged for blind genealogists and their families. Guide Dogs are of course more than welcome and extremely well catered for.
All bedrooms are en suite, and there is a 24 hour bar. The price will include evening meal on Friday, breakfast and evening meal on Saturday, breakfast and evening meal on Sunday, and breakfast on Monday. Depending on the time of year the themed break is arranged will depend on the cost, but as a guideline, 45 pounds per person per night will give you a rough idea.
There is a railway station at Teignmouth, but not all trains travelling to the southwest stop there. So a pickup service is offered by the hotel from Newton Abbot and Paignton railway stations, as well as Exeter airport for those arriving by plane from further away. There is a charge for this service.
If anyone is interested in this break, please feel free to contact me offlist with any queries or suggestions you'd like to make.
Please note that Action for Blind People are arranging this themed break with the assistance of a number of experienced family historians.
More news will be posted as it becomes available.
Kind regards to all, Jon
