David, were any of the marriages after 1837?, if so, a marriage certificate
should show the fathers name. Before that..........tricky, especially as the
1841 census says "not born in Devon". You obviously have some details of his
marriages, but it is doubtful if the pre 1837 parish record entries will
have his father's name - your only hope would be to check the marriage and
Banns records to see if any other information is given, possibly it might
say "of the parish of......" If he married in Devonport, he may possibly
have been in the Royal Navy- perhaps it would be worth exploring that way
through the PRO.

Subject: [DEV] Gt Gt Grandfather Michael Nichols
I need help badly to find out more about my gt.gt.grandfather Michael
Nichols,in particular where he was born and who his parents were.
He was married (for the first time) at Devonport England in 1796. He
appears to have married three more times after that, and died at Devonport in
1846 aged 70 years.
On the 1841 census he is shown as not born in Devon.
Big question. What do I do now,and where do I look?
I would be extremely grateful for any help whatsoever.
