One last thought. I obtained my parents entries before FMP under the Freedom of
Information Act. The information was extracted and sent on a typed form at great expenses.
The records were held by:
The Information Centre for Health and Social Care
I am guessing they still hold the records and control who gets to the redacted records.

Replies from TNA and Findmypast confirm they have no record of the abbreviations hence my
search for someone who actually made the changes pre 1992 - there must be a few people
around who are on family history mail lists so if we spread the word , someone may pop up.
Having said that it may or may not help our research but I have learned to leave no stone
