Origins are offering the Devon Will Project Index for free.
Absolutely! Richard and I have been busy making the arrangements for this over a number of
months, since we have from the inception of DWP wanted to provide a search, as opposed to
just a browsing, facility for DWP, and hence were delighted when we were approached by
NWI, in early 2012, about a possible co-operation.
Following detailed discussions with NWI, and our DWP partners, we have been in recent
months been seeking and obtaining clearances from all the organisations and individuals
who have provided data to DWP for us to make our database available to NWI - having
reached a formal agreement with NWI that they will not hand the database on to anyone else
without prior permission, and that their planned DWP-based search facility will, and will
remain, free to all users.
However as yet NWI have received only just over a third of our database, from just three
of our sources, the calendars of the Exeter and Barnstaple wills that were lost in WW2.
We have yet to supply NWI with the major part of our database, which provides details of
the Devon will transcripts and abstracts we have found in about five hundred further
sources. (The entire database is of course already, and will remain, available for
browsing in GENUKI/Devon.) We and NWI also have yet to finalise the exact form of the
However, this initial release does give a good idea of how the whole of DWP will be
searchable in the near future - and hence how Richard's and my initial ambitions for
it will finally be fulfilled.
Best wishes, Chris
