Just a thought -- Could he be a pilot for the rivers and harbours for the
Royal Navy ships?

Subject: [DEV] King's pilot
I'm researching the Adams family of Plymouth, and have come across a
reference to a (?) Adams in a register of inhabitants of Devonport in 1791.
He is listed as a 'king's pilot'.
I thought I knew a bit about river pilots, but this one has stumped me and
Google's no help! Has anyone any idea what this might mean? It occurs to me
that he might have been a pilot for naval vessels.
