On the weekend, tidying some notes I made at DRO in the mid-1970's, (pre IGI and our
Lists) , when I naively thought that anyone named STEER in Devon was probably related and
had descended from a single splendid Anglo-Saxon STEER family. Consequently I haphazardly
collected any reference to STEER, STEERE, STURE and the other varients. Among my notes is
Walter de STUER, mentioned in 1315 in connection with the Teign Ferry Case, in something
referenced as Stephen de HACCOMBE.
Since the River Bovey is also the West Teign, I fondly imagined that Walter might be my
earliest recorded ancestor. However, (typically) I have no idea where I found the
reference, except that it is somewhere in the DRO horde, and wonder whether anyone on the
List might also have come across it? Or whether anyone knows where the several ferries in
Teignbridge Hundred might have been located at that time? Mike.
