Hi Una-- what kind of computer are you using? Part of the problem with
sharing the information is that we're all using different varieties of
computers, and browsers. I'm using a Mac with OSX, and while it handles
most Tiff files at other similar sites easily, I had some problems with
the britishorigins site's images. I finally had to install Graphic
Converter, which is only for Mac, and then have to save each image to
my hard drive before I can open it. I don't know enough about this to
figure out why something like 1837online works easily and
That said-- did you look at the help section at british origins? It had
several suggestions for getting the site to work with a Mac, and that's
how I finally got it to work. So probably you ought to work through
those suggestions for your system and browser.
And to keep this related to Devon-- I had great luck with the "search"
feature here. I had been planning to go through the whole of Brixham
1841, on microfilm and instead was able to go through the census very
easily-- the search feature was great at finding variants that I didn't
think of. For those of you who haven't looked at it yet, it's only 7.50
GBP for a 72 hour subscription, which was plenty for me right now.
