The Cobb I believe refers to the walls built out into the sea to provide the
harbour at Lyme Regis in Dorset otherwise it does not have a natural
harbour. The walls are so substantial that there are cottages on it - one
now a museum. It features in Persuasion by Jane Austen & was used in the TV
version where one of the cottages became Capt. Harvill's home. The Cobb is
also prominent in the film The French Lieutenant's Woman.

Subject: [DEV] Where is "Cobb, Lyme"
I just received a GRO death certificate (1851) place of death:
"Cobb Lyme" - in Axminster Registration District, Lyme sub district.
My Road Atlas shows the city of Lyme Regis, and my Devon parish map shows
Uplyme - these are the only "Lyme" I can find.
Can anyone tell me which - or where - Cobb Lyme would be?
