First a big thank you to all involved in transcribing Plymouth Artificers
I have a couple of questions on the date of entry and age that are listed.
Presumably the date of entry is the date of entry as an apprentice for those
apprenticed at Plymouth? And presumably the age is the man's age in 1779?
Samuel Mansfield listed on page 92 is the brother of an ancestor of mine. I
don't have his date of birth, but his age is given as 22 which would make
his birth year c.1757 which is certainly a conveniently empty slot amongst
his other 9 brothers and sisters birth dates.
My ancestor, Samuel's brother, was Charles John Moore Mansfield, captain of
the Minotaur at the battle of Trafalgar. (I am sure Devon will be keen to
claim another Trafalgar captain - his family background is not in any of the
published books and I have put that right on my website
The family had strong connections both with the royal dockyards, and with
the Navy. Their father, also Samuel Mansfield (c.1720-c.1780), was Master
Caulker at Plymouth, which I believe makes him one of the Assistant Master
Shipwrights. Samuel (junior) was the second son to become a shipwright -
his elder brother John Mansfield was also a shipwright and moved to
Sheerness (presumably for promotion?). John Mansfield's daughter Mary
married John William Nelson who became "Clerk of the Survey in His Majesty's
Dock Yard of Deptford", and possibly became a Master Shipwright. I believe
his father was John Nelson, Master Shipwright at Chatham.
Ann Mansfield, sister of John, Samuel (junior) and Charles, married George
Jope who was at some time rector of Stoke Damerel and chaplain at Plymouth
Another three brothers became lieutenants in the Navy, and another a
lieutenant in the Marines, but all other than Charles John Moore died fairly
I am keen to learn more about the family's connections with the royal
dockyards, so would be grateful for any information on any of these
individuals or for suggestions on avenues of research that might provide
more detail. Most of the information above is from wills of various family
