I am asking for advice on how to find records of employment of school
teachers in the last 40 years of the 19thcentury.
I have a great-grandfather (William Hicks Hill b 1842 Northlew, Devon)
who was a schoolmaster. He got married in St.Dominicks Cornwall in 1863
and, although he was only 20, the marriage certificate already has him
as a schoolmaster. In 1871 there are two census records for him
(Calstock and Broadwoodwidger) but in both he is listed as a visitor
and a schoolmaster. Then he turns up teaching in Northleigh in
Oxfordshire in 1881 but his back down as the Schoolmaster at
Broadwoodwidger in the 1891 census.
Hoping you can help,
