I'm looking for some ideas for a trip involving maybe 4 - 5 days in Dawlish.
coming from Canada and it would be part of a longer trip to other places.
My ancestors WHEATON / WHIDDON (and various other spellings) originated
from there around 1690.
I guess the purpose of the trip would be part vacation, part research in
that I might
check out some cemetaries or something - I haven't quite thought about it
I know there were lots of Whiddons in Chagford and I'll probably go there,
don't know if I have any ties to them.
I've had trouble finding much information online about my ancestors in
but it seems that they immigrated to Newfoundland some time between 1690 and
1722. I just thought going there and soaking up the ambience and wandering
around the countryside would be neat even if I didn't find out all that
The 2 of us are tentatively thinking of March or Oct 2008. Would that be off
tourist season? Would it be necessary to book hotels etc in advance or just
a place when we got there?
Any suggestions welcomed!
