Since the list is quiet still, can I ask for thoughts on a matter which has puzzled me for
years. I have before me the Birth Certificate of my great grandfather who was Samuel
Thomas Ball at birth but later called himself Samuel Richard (changing or adding names
seems to be a quirk of the Ball family). The certificate says Plymouth St Andrew 1841,
Fifth February, Willow Street in the Parish of St Andrew. Samuel Thomas, boy, father
Samuel Ball shoemaker, mother Mary Ball, formerly Helson (mark), registered 19 February
1841. James Wyatt registrar.
This is fine but I have never established Samuel and Mary's marriage. There is an 1825
marriage at Charles of Samuel Ball to Mary Climmow, but that could easily be a coincidence
since there were plenty of Balls in Plymouth. Are Mary Helson and Mary Climmow the same
person? If so, which was her original name? Has anyone sighted a Helson family?
All good offers gratefully received!
