still active with WW2 veterans and have links to the Ministry of Defence and their

Many thanks to all who have replied and may, as I write, still be searching!
As nobody else seems to have "claimed" this person, do you wish to follow up on
behalf of the DFHS?
As mentioned in my first email, I was sent this query by Devon Heritage Centre, who
received the original request and asked me to circulate it to the various Devon lists and
Devon FHS's WWW Board.
I am making my DHC contact aware of all your replies through the publicly available
Devon-L Archives page - as detailed at the bottom of every Devon-L message:
She is very pleased with all the responses and will pass them on to the Library Manager in
Thank you again,

Martin, the marriage you have for Caroline A.Walton (who is probably still alive so
perhaps we shouldn’t be writing about her) cannot be correct as it’s 1963 and she was b.
1950 so only aged 13 then!
However I agree that she’s probably John Ellis Walton’s niece and that there were no
other children of the Peter Walton - Maria Heinz marriage. Peter may also still be
living - no death record up to 2007 anyway. Maria may have died in 1997 in York Reg.D.
I’ve also explored John Ellis Walton’s aunt Edith Margaret Ellis, sister of his mother.
She married Frank Cooper Chappell in 1919 (Sep Q Barnstaple Reg.D.). I’m sure this is
correct as he died in 1934 and the probate index shows that one of his executors was John
Ellis, Timber Merchant, who was his father in law.
Edith and Frank seem to have had one son John Chappell b. 1927, Hampstead Reg.D. who
could also be still living and have children but I’ve rather drawn a blank after that and
haven’t had any convincing success with Herbert and his family.
Obviously a lot of this, although it hangs together pretty well, is speculation without
the relevant certificates to confirm name/dates/places.
Perhaps the best thing is to get a piece about the quest for John’s living descendants
into the press. It’s a v. interesting story.
