Can anyone explain why the Pilton Baptism register for 1702 seems to show that a tax was
being collected. I have never seen this anywhere before.
I would also appreciated it if someone who is more experienced than myself at old
handwriting, could complete the transcription of the entry I was interested in.(From FInd
'Joan daughter of Georg Haripate and Joan his wife baptized May 10 ye 2s to be pd by
Joan Haripate having ?? Pilton and no other taxe to be pd for ye birth?? of ye
Most of the other entries on the page seem to be too poor to pay the tax. Why is the wife
having to pay and not the husband?
