Obtaining the birth certificate of one of the children will confirm the mother's
surname and is the most reliable way to find the information but I have found some
circumstantial evidence that supports the John Hawker/Mary Ann Harris marriage at
Marylebone 12 May 1837 as the likely one. Firstly the date (1823) eliminates the Mary Ann
Stockton/John Hawker marriage if Mary Ann was born c1817.
On the 1841 census a William and Susan Harris are listed in the same household at Chelsea
as John and Mary Ann Hawker, both are aged about 20 (1841 census ages are rounded down).
Possibly Mary Ann's siblings?
Do you have access to FindMyPast? I have found a newspaper account 21 Mar 1857 of Mary
Ann's inquest which mentions a brother in law Frederick Tranckle. There are several
baptisms at Chelsea with parents Frederick and Susan Tranckle on Familysearch and on
FreeBMD the names Susan Harris and Frederick Alexander Traenckle are included in the list
of Marriages Sep 1851 at Lambeth. The inquest gave a verdict "the deceased died
suddenly from extravasion of blood in the brain".
I haven't been able to find the Tranckles in any of the census returns.
