Don't fret, Danial - the name Avery has been added in the years after the compilation
of the original register in 1939, when your grandmother married. Much of the register was
kept up to date as people married or died.

Subject: [DEV] Chagford 1939
Is anyone familiar with Chagford? I have the 1939 register for my Grandmother
[1924-1988](at least I think it is her!) and she is listed as being a General servant in
Outer Down, Chagford.
The two people she lives with, or work for are locked and therefore are potentially still
alive. I have attached the record.
I'd love to know which house this is and potentially get in contact with the
occupants if they are still with us.
It is a lovely town, I went to visit my Grandmother's grave at the Church there last
year, after I left I discovered my Great-grandmother is also buried there.
On the Record it shows my Grandmother Muriel Adams born in 1924. This would make her 15.
What concerns me is this. Adams has been crossed out and 'Avery' written above. I
know from primary sources that Muriel, goes on to become a Land Girl between 1941-45. She
worked on land owned by the Heggedon family in Germansweek.
All standard so far.
She marries my grandfather Harold Henry AVERY (1911-1999) in 1945 and my uncle Kenneth
Avery in born early 1946.
Why would her surname be listed as Avery in 1939?
Background note, my Grandmother was illegitimate. Her mother's maiden name is Rudall.
The father was married Major John Sylvester Connole. My Grandmother's Aunt and husband
unofficially adopted Muriel. Their surname is Adams. On her marriage bann she is listed as
Muriel Rudall Adams.
What is going on? If anyone on this list can aid me or remembers these people mentioned
please get in touch.
I'll be happy to forward the record to anyone wishing to help.
