I am in Australia and haven't written to the list before.
I have been researching my family history in Exmouth and hoping that someone will be able
to help me with finding my grandmother's adoption record between 1878 and 1881, and
related solicitor's records, a boarding house near Exmouth station, death and census
records for seamen.
1. My grandmother Rose Nellie MARDON who was born 27 October 1878 in St Thomas
registration district Exmouth. Her mother Rose MARDON, born in Exeter in 1858, was
unmarried. Rose Nellie was adopted some time before the 1881 census by Emma and Charles
CABE, and on the 1881 census was described as "Nellie CABE, adopted daughter, parents
unknown" aged two. On the National (Beacon) Schools Admissions record her name is
Nelly Rose CABE. The family lived in Market Street Exmouth. Would there be a record of the
2. As part of the adoption Emma CABE was paid 2 shillings a week for Rose Nellie's
education and care. Is there some way I can find out who paid the 2 shillings and how that
was organized? Are there solicitors records of such things?
3. I have a family letter that says Rose Nellie was born at Mrs BARNES boarding house at
or near the Exmouth Railway Station, but I haven't found any record of BARNES / BARN,
etc in Exmouth on Find My Past, Ancestry, and other sites. She was said to be married and
had a daughter Martha from a previous marriage and a baby also called Nellie.
4. Charles CABE was a seaman born 1838 at Lympstone Devon, and he died at sea sometime
before1881. Is there a way I can find details of his death, and census details for him
when he was at sea on census days?
I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me.
