Is it possible to see a copy of the photo?
It is very likely to be of Royal Marines in this area (I live in Exmouth) as
their main training camp is at Lympstone...
and was on Woodbury Common during WW2.
I have a photo of a group of Royal Marines, which includes my Grandfather,
who was Company Sergeant Major at Lympstone during WW2, so I should be able
to compare the uniforms for you if you can send a copy.
I could also ask one of my RM neighbours what they think.
Is there anything distinctive in the background? If there is I may be able
to identify the place for you.

Subject: [DEV] Photo
Hello all. I have a photograph which was taken by The Strand Studios,
Exmouth. It is of a military squad. 37 young men standing and 3 older men
sitting at the front.
One of the seated men was a relative of mine and he was born in 1915, so it
could have been taken 1940-1950. He was a Lieutenant, the instructor, and is
the only one who has 'stripes'.
One of the others seated has a different belt buckle and what seem to be
badges/patches on his lower sleeves.
From the studio stamp on the back all that I can read is the studio
the rest is faded and blurred.
The photo was sent to my grandfather by his 2nd. cousin and I managed to
rescue it, after my grandmother died in 1993, just as my Aunt was about to
burn it. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time that day, as
I also managed to save other family photos.
My query is; does anybody have any advice on how can I find out just where
and what this group were?
Who knows? one of these people could be your ancestor.
Thanks in advance, Erin (in Australia).
