Beverley.. you’re a wonder. I haven’t had time to look at it yet, but I downloaded it and
thought it would take me ages to transcribe.
That Canntor is the earliest occurrence of the name I can find .. there is some
uncertainty about the place name. It’s Staverton on the DWP Index .. and from what you’ve
said it sounds like a Staverton Canntor.
The Toopes were an Ashburton family married into a Staverton family.
But I didn’t find it on Ancestry either .. presume you mean Ancestry uk?

Thomas Canntor - written 27 September 1595 - donates to the poor of Aishberton out of one
meadow of his lying by Gullwill Bridge - has a deceased brother John Canntor that left a
son Roger who must be a minor at school because he gets a yearly bequest for 16 years for
maintenance at school... to be taken out of testators land at Stoverton & Ashberton -
nephew Philippe Tape gets land within the land of Totnes but he can not sell them or they
revert back to the heirs of the testator - wife is Elizabeth - Christopher and John
Canntor are also son sof testator's deceased brother John Canntor and they also
receive land but can not sell it - deceased brother John also left a daughter Johane
Canntor - bequests to Margaret Toope & Mary Toope with no relationship given - bequest
to "every of my godchildren" - overseers of the will are John Blundell, James
Abraham, John Canntor of Halfworthie, and Thomas Canntor - probated 25 October 1595 to the
relic Elizabeth who apparently dies before 12 May 1624 when Roger Canntor is placed at the
administrator of the will

I’ve read all the advice on GENUKI including Jean Harris’s own explanation of the Index. I
hope I’m not being dim and have completely missed something obvious. Perhaps I need to use
