Many Devon family historians will have ancestors who lived or worked across the border in
Dorset. For this reason, you might be interested in the Dorset Death Certificate Index
), a free website to help family historians share information about
deaths registered in Dorset from 1837 to 1875.
The coverage includes Chardstock which, until 1896, was part of Dorset but is now in
Devon. The parish of Thorncombe travelled in the other direction – it was part of Devon
but transferred to Dorset in 1844.
The site currently has transcripts of over 450 death certificates made available by other
family historians. The more certificates we have, the more useful the site will be.
