Greetings.
My g-g-grandfather stated on Victorian (Australia) certificates
that he was born in Devon, no precise location being given.
The IGI gives no clear indication that any christenings around
1815 onwards may actually be my g-g-grandfather, William Stephens/Stevens.
He always used his full name, apart from his marriage certificate
(no parental information was required on these at the time); his
full name was William Anstey Stevens.
The "Anstey" provides a clue as being (probably) an old family
surname but, once again, there are no links remotely obvious in what I
have seen in the IGI.
The IGI, of course, does not cover more than about 66% of Devon
parishes (I think this is still correct).
Any clues that anyone has seen ?
On my mother's side, the Charles Phillips Rhodes (the surname
being better known as Phillips in todays descendants) stated that his
father was "John Phillips Rhodes", "sea captain" and his mother,
"Susan
Cursewell" ( from the 1851 Census, more likely, "Kerswill" in spelling).
He was born in ca. 1835. A
Has anyone seen anything on these people ? Charles migrated to Australia
in the 1850's.
Thanking you for your time.
Rob Stevens
