Recently I received a GRO birth certificate for an 1839 birth. Column
the form contains the signature, discription (in my case, the mother) and
residence of the informant.
The residence is listed as "Hoops"! The birth was listed in Parkham, sub
District of the Bideford District. I was previously under the impression
that this family lived in Bideford. I can't find any village with the name
of Hoops. Does anybody have any ideas?
The Online gazetteer in GENUKI/Devon (
. ) lists a Hoop Inn in
Parkham and a Hoops Inn in Hartland. I've been to what I assume must
be the former of these, a lovely very old inn, which is on the A39. I
recall that there are road signs identifying the Inn and the little
group of houses near it as Hoops, though it is a (tiny) hamlet rather
than a village. Indeed it is marked as Hoops on the 1:25000 Ordnance
Survey map, and is about half a mile W of Horn's Cross, 1 1/2 miles E
of the road down to Buck's Mills.
