I've been trying to trace my wife's great-grandfather and great-grandmother.
Please can you help me with any of the missing information?
He was James Wood, born Devon 1827 (I don't know the place or exact date); and he died
(I don't know where) in 1886. She was born Mary Ann Unthank in 1849 (I don't know
the date or where), and she died in Cape Town on 23/11/1943. I also am looking for the
date and place of their marriage. They had a child, Frank Wood, who was born in New York
James was a sea captain, and we have already obtained a great deal about him from the
Lloyds Registers in the Guildhall Library, when we were in London in October. He sailed
between 1859 and 1876 on four ships (Amy, Fanny, Willie and Polly) owned by Hurrell &
Co of Salcombe. We've no idea what he did or where he was from the time he left the
Polly (his last ship) in 1876 until he died in 1886. At some stage his wife ended up in
Cape Town with Frank and remarried.
