Subject: MORRISH(Exeter) Research
Dear List,
I have just subscribed to the List and was overwhelmed by the response - 99
e-mails first time!
I am researching the Morrish family from Exeter and belong to the Devon FHS
and subscribe to the Morrish-L list which has been a fantastic help. On my
last visit to Devon RO and WCSL in Exeter in June, I managed to find a bit
more of my Morrish ancestors from Exeter, Devon. Below is a resume:
William MORRISH (1803) born in Exeter. bapt. 30/5/1803 at St Mary Major,
Exeter (my GG Grandfather)
siblings: Sally (1794) married Richard LEACH in Exeter, 1812
Mary Summers (1796) possibly named after Mother's
sister Mary Summers who died 1794
Wife: Rebecca Jenkins(1803) born in MENT, London. Married:
17/8/1828 in Stepney, London.
(Still to establish is when and why did William travel to London sometime in
the 25 years between his birth and his marriage in London to Rebecca?) He
became a plasterer by trade which subsequently ran through my family to my
Uncle John Robert MORRISH(1906) whom I believe was the last plasterers in
the family.
parents: John MORRISH (1767) Exeter. bapt. St Mary
Major, 20/9/1767) Married 31/10/1790 at St Mary
Arches, Exeter to Ann SUMMERS(? )
(on marriage cert. John is recorded, hardly legible, as being a "Hellier" by
profession. Could this be Hotelier - does anyone know?)
John MORRISH (1767)
?parents: John MORRISH (?1747) Exeter )
Married 1/12/1765 at St Georges, Exeter
Anne
)
This last entry is an assumption based on John's (1767) baptism record which
stated that his parents were John and Anne MORRISH. On the DFHS's marriage
index for 1754-1812 there is only one Anne marrying a John MORRISH at about
the right time in Exeter. Jack said that I should go for it and see where it
leads. I shall endeavour to find this entry on my next visit to Devon
probably using the Tree House records. The name MORRISH by the way was
recorded as Morish on both Sally's marriage and my John's marriage to Ann
Summers.
Also advised to check connection with MORRISH name with hundreds of
Grenadines who fled after the Spanish Armada defeat to Ireland and the West
of England. The name was Moorish from the Moorish people of Grenada. Anyone
else heard of this connection? Whilst at the WCSL I looked up details of St
Mary Major church and discovered that it had been completely rebuilt in 1865
so there is no known record of its original design and it was demolished in
1970s since it was right next to the Cathedral! The vicar there in 1767 was
William Gates BA and in 1790 Walter Kitson BA. From a very interesting book
I managed to find called Exeter Profile of a City (there seems to be several
in the collection) by Paul Hardy there would appear to have been a lot of
Millers living in Exeter (profession that is) so maybe my John MORRISH was
really a Miller and there should not have been a 'i' in it.
If there are any Morrish, Hawkins or Summers still living in Exeter and
think that they may be connected I would love to hear from them direct.
Thanks for everyone's imput.
Regards,
Jenny Plumb
