Hi, there is a will 1078/IWR/R/200 1847 for Thomas
Reed of Abbots Bickington . If this is Emily and Thomas`s grandfather , it
may mention them .
Familysearch has the bapt of Harriet Braddon the dau of
Humphrey and Catherine Braddon in Abbots B in 1829 . In all the census
the Reeds are a landowning family at Court Barton , and Thomas senr and
Thomas junr appear in various documents on Access to Archives . I don`t see
any orders for the maintenance of Harriet Braddon`s children .
According to Genuki/Devon /Abbots Bickington , it was
in 1850 a parish of 75 souls , so maybe it was with complete understanding
that Thomas Reed senr maintained the children of his son John ? there may
be notes in the bapt registers but only the OPC will know that .
life is hard . soften it with a cat \\\=^..^=///

Subject: [DEV] Emily BRADDON of Abbots Bickington
Wondering if the anyone could help with their views on the father of Emily
BRADDON born 26th Dec 1862 at Abbots Bickington.
My problem is her father?
I have her birth certificate in which her father isn't named, her mother
is named as Harriet BRADDON who was born abt 1830 at Abbots Bickington.I
have her first marriage certificate, to a George CHAPPLE on the 22nd May
1881 at Buckland Brewer and her father is named as John REED labourer.
I have found her mother in all census years and she never married, Harriet
had 5 children that I have found, all born in Abbots Bickington and Emily
was the youngest.
Their appears to be only one John REED living in Abbots Bickington at
about that time, 1851 census at Court Barton living with his parents
Thomas and Mary Reed and 1861 again with his parents both times unmarried.
Also in 1851 the Thomas BRADDON listed is Harriet's younger brother.
So do I take this John REED to be Emilys father or is their any other
source or suggestion from others to prove or disprove this man? There is a
unmarried John REED living in the 1891 census at Newton St Petrock, which
could be the same person. I haven't purchased the other 4 birth
certificates for brothers and sisters because of the cost involved.
Her mother Harriet was in the Torrington workhouse in the 1881 census and
died sep qtr 1881, the same year Emily married!
Am I being too cautious, is it normal for her father not to be on her
birth certificate and did she make up her fathers name on her marriage
certificate if her mother had passed away?
Many thanks for your comments
