After several months away, I've now got back to doing some further genealogy research.
Some of you may remember my previous postings regarding having traced back my MELHUISH
line to a Robert Turner Melhuish, born 1834 in Uffculme to parents John Melhuish and Fanny
Sansom who married 15/11/1827. I'm currently rather confused and muddled with pre-1837
records and searches using the IGI, so now turn again to this list hoping for some help
and advice. Just to say please note that for the sake of avoiding repetitions in this
post, all events I mention took place in Uffculme unless otherwise stated.
I now believe that Robert T's father John was christened 9/6/1812 - I know this means
he would have been only 15 and-a-bit at time of marriage according to these records, but I
assume that he was christened a few months (possibly even several) after being born and
therefore would have actually been over-16. I couldn't find any other likely records
so have just gone with this theory.
John's parents were Henry and Elizabeth (surname:?). I wasn't able to find a
marriage in Uffculme, however did find a marriage of a Henry Melhuish to Elizabeth Fry on
4/3/1811 in nearby Culmstock which I assume at the moment to be the one, since I
didn't find any other possibilities.
Henry was born 21/11/1783 and christened 2/1/1785. His parents were Robert Melhuish and
Elizabeth (surname:?) who had 6 other children between 1779 and 1798. I haven't been
able to find the marriage between Robert and Elizabeth - at the moment I can only think
that this is because they married in a neighbouring parish to Uffculme which is not
covered by the IGI - perhaps someone can help with finding this.
Searching the Uffculme records further, I found some earlier entries, which I expect to
tie into the family tree somehow but currently have been unable to do so. William Melhuish
married (don't know when) Jane (surname:?) and they had 7 children between 1751 and
1768, including a Robert christened 14/6/1754. My gut feeling is that this Robert is
probably the one that married Elizabeth, however I haven't been able to find any
evidence to prove that yet.
If anyone is able to help me out with furthering my research with regards to these above
points then that will as always be much appreciated, I look forward to hearing from you.
