Does anyone know of the name Archie WELLINGTON?
He was my step grandfather who I believe was born between 1870 and 1890 and
lived the latter part of his life in Shaldon, Devon, after he married my
Grandmother Amy Louise CHURCHILL (nee LOVELL). I believe he died in the
late 1940's/early 50's.
I have tried the 1881 and 1901 censuses to no avail - perhaps Archie was a
Thank you in advance for any info
Regards from Yvonne in a cloudy and windy Paignton, Devon.
I've been trying to track down a Mark Taylor born about 1868 in Barnstaple,
and he's driving me quietly mad.
Mark married Ellen LEMON in 1888 at the Holy Trinity Church in Barnstaple.
His address was Trinity (either Street or Square) and she was living in
Belle Alley. Mark's father is shown as John TAYLOR, occupation of Hawker.
When checking the 1881 census, there is a John Taylor, occupation of Hawker,
living in Winkleigh...
John TAYLOR (Head) M Male 38 Bristol Hawker
Harriet TAYLOR Other M Female 31 Chard Hawker
John TAYLOR Other Male 10 Barnstaple Scholar
Mark TAYLOR Other Male 9 Tiverton Scholar
Joseph TAYLOR Son U Male 7 Winkleigh Scholar
Henry TAYLOR Son Male 4 Scholar
Harriet Jane TAYLOR Daur Female 2 Infant
Charlotte TAYLOR Daur Female 5 w Infant
Jane TAYLOR Daur Female 5 w Infant
Susanna BAKER Servant Female 24 Beaford
Dwelling Vine Street, Winkleigh, Devon
... but this would have meant that the 'other' called Mark (what the heck
does it mean anyway??? Harriet married John Taylor in 1871 in Launceston, so
I think he's being a tad cheeky in referring to her as an 'other'...) would
have only been 17 or 18 when he married, and whilst I appreciate that he
could have lied on the certificate, he does give his age as 21 and there's
no mention in the family history about there being an age gap in his favour.
There is also this Mark Taylor...
James DAVEY Head W Male 62 Bishops Tawton, Devon, England Bill
Thirza TAYLOR Boarder M F 50 Swimbridge, Devon, England
Mark TAYLOR Boarder Male 13 Barnstaple, Devon, England
Green Lane, Barnstaple, Devon
Who I rather prefer the look of, but when applying for a birth certificate
that I found on the 18370nline site for that birth year, I was informed that
they wouldn't issue the certificate as the father is not a John
In 1891, Ellen TAYLOR is back with her mother and no trace of Mark. Although
there is a Mark TAYLOR born Barnstaple in Wandsworth prison in 1891, but
this Mark TAYLOR is only 19.
Mark and Ellen do have a go at some sort of married life, as they managed to
have 3 children, Rosina, Percy and Elsie, all born between 1891 and 1895 in
Barnstaple, but I've not been able to track him down successfully on any
census so far, nor have I ever found anything else to confirm his

My message direct to you bounced.
There are not any Statt entries in the 1851 at or born at Newton Abbott,
but John's parents may have married or moved between 1851 and 1861, so your
enquiry re 1861 may give you the information you need.

Could someone let me know where I could find a list for the individual Online Parish Record Clerks.
I am interested in the Halwell - Morley (Morleigh) - Blackawton - Stoke Fleming - Newton Toney? areas.
Bakewell - N.T. - Oz
I have just come from and shall be returninbg to the the following URL http://libraryweek.galedemo.com/history.htm
On this page are links to "Free For All" Databases.
I have just been 'briefly having a look at Eighteenth Century Collection, using the search term "Devon" .... the full texts can be viewed on line and there is a facility to 'search' with in the individual text for a specific term/name (unfortunately with the surname GRANT it pulls up every reference to a 'grant' of land etc as well :-)) ... you can also access the he Times Digital Archive .... and other sources.
I didn't get asked for any passwords, registration or otherwise .....
Hope this helps someone
I wonder if any CHAMBERS family are still living in Exeter. John Chambers died there 25th April 1903 but he had 8 children that I know: John, Sarah Ann, Charles Alfred (my GGrandfather who came to Australia in 1890), George, Blanche Dwelley, Frank Albert and Edward.
Lucille & Chris THOMAS
Attached to my family tree are the Marshalls of Treworgey Manor (near Liskeard Cornwall in St. Cleer) but the family has BOTH Devon and Cornwall connexions. Bit by bit I've been learning of them; however, I cannot as yet get a feel for the group.
I gather that there are direct members of the family living in Cornwall (Armenall) and in Plymouth (William + sons). All are off-spring of Coleridge Connock Marshall but I cannot contact them. The group will not be real until I can see them ... therefore, are there SKSs that MIGHT have, have access to, get a loan of etc. photos or the equivalents of:
-- Treworgey Manor itself noting that it had a terrible fire and was gutted in 1938 and did not resemble the new version so I'm told. It's anything of the OLD Manor house that I'd like to see (inside, outside, seagull's or earthworm's eyeview ...)
-- Marshall Family members and/or their off-spring including:
(1) William Nicholas Marshall and/or his wife Everilda (Carrington). They are well before cameras but there might be a sketch, drawing, etc ...
(2) William Nicholas Connock Marshall and/or his last (of 3) wife Harriett Georgiana (Coleridge)
(3) Coleridge Connock Marshall ("The Old Squire" who died in 1948) and or his wife Edith (Cheriton). This is where the direct connection to me comes but I'm interested in the others too.
Perhaps someone has an old book/brochure/info sheet about the family or the manor or the area that might have contemporary photos that could be scanned. If there's a chance that you might be able to help, please contact me off-list at gdwatson(a)accesscable.net and put MARSHALL in the subject line. Scans, etc. would be great and would re-kindle an embered fire here. TIA ... Cheers,

The results of asking for an 1881 census look-up for John Statt with wife Ellen and 3 children, also brought up a census for the Statt family in Durham, with their son, John, still at home, age 21.
This means that I have 'mixed up' individuals and put the wrong person with the wrong branch of the family. Could SKS please take a look at the Newton Abbot census for 1861 so I can determine who the parents of the John in Newton Abbot are.
Thank you in advance

Subject: [DEV] 1881 census lookup please
I need to confirm children for an ancestor. There is disagreement
between myself and another researcher of this family as to whether this
particular Statt married and had children.
I have: JOHN STATT (b.1858) with wife ELLEN and 3 children in
Whitchurch Devon or in Durham:
With the (possible) exception of Lily, the children should all show on
the 1881 census.
Thanks a bunch!
