"with same" and "by the same" mean "going along the property line
"in a line of person X" means somewhere on one of person X's property
I entered the parcel as follows. (You can copy it to the Text View.) Sure enough,
it doesn't close! It looks like it wants to be a strange kind of rectangle, which
angles of the sides want to more or less be the same.
1. When you look at it in the Plot View the first line really stands out
as being incorrect. Note the angle of 38/45. There's another line that has the same
angle. Change N38/45W to N38/45E and the two lines are now parallel to each
other and the parcel gets much better. Northeast rather than northwest.
2. Now look at the second line. Its angle is 61 degrees. But a number of other angles
are 51/15. This suggests that 61 should be 51. Making this change
causes the parcel to close pretty well. (Fifty and Sixty look very very similar when
written in old script. Twenty and Seventy have the same problem.)

Subject: [DMU] Understanding early Pennsylvania land deeds
I have had Deed-Mapper for many years, used it when it first came out
3.5" floppy, then got side-tracked with life.
Currently using version 4.1
I have been wanting to map an ancestor's many land deeds hoping to narrow
down when he died by the buying and selling of his land and this is my
project for this month.
I am working with 1790-1800 land deeds in Montgomery County, outside of
Philadelphia, PA and struggling with the land descriptions in some of the
deeds, what to abstract out and what to ignore and how to interpret some of
the phrases ie "thence by the same ..." or "in a line of ..."
I have had some success with a couple, but ...
Here is one I have struggled with all afternoon.
beginning in a line of John Zoller's land
thence by the same north 38/45 west 50 perches
to a corner of Anthony Vanderslice’s land
thence by the same south 61 degrees east 66.4 perches
to a corner of Christian Gross land intended also to be shortly conveyed to
thence by the same south 38/35 west 12 perches
thence south 51/15 east 40 perches
to a corner and north 38/45 east 12 perches
to a corner in said Vanderslice’s line
thence by the same south 51/15 east 48 perches
to another corner of said Christian Gross
thence by the same south 38/45 west 54 perches
to a corner of Daniel Sahlor’s land
thence by the same north 18 degrees west 7 perches
and north 51/15 west 147.4 perches
to the place of beginning
containing 45 acres and 40 perches
I tried just entering it as I see it, abstracting it out into a text doc,
then entering it and it plots as a convoluted mess. I even tried deleting
some of the descriptions.
Any assistance or direction as when where I can find helping interpreting
these deeds would be greatly appreciated.
