Not in NYS - very rare. Also the County Map Department does not have the
surveys. This really didn't start happening until the 1970's when
subdivisions started. They are not with the deed, but in the map
department.
I have been researching deeds for our Town for 30 years now and many were
missing. They were on tax assessment but no deed. Some of them we found in
the mortgage books. Reseaching this topic - it is not a legal requirement
to file the deed with the County Clerk.

Gordon: I am working in Surry County, NC. When I get the old deeds (prior
to 1800) from the NC Archives, the surveyor's plat is also included; or
perhaps you have to ask for the plat. It gives a hand drawn outline of the
property, the beginning point, the description and usually includes any
creeks or waterways. I would think it would be the same for other counties
in NC. Don't know about other states.

Lee,
You make the remark about using the original surveyor's note to verify
calls. Is there a place, aside from the governmental archives that would
contain the field notes by a private surveyor, especially from the 1700's?
I
often wondered about the disposition of ancient filed books; they must be
full of wonderful information, if decipherable.
