Subject: Re: [DMU] New user-which map layers to purchase?
Hi! I am planning on purchasing the software and hope that the
booklet is EASY to follow. Would someone be so kind as to suggest which
map layers I should purchase in the beginning [which are most helpful,
Streams, Road, Rail, or Pub. Land? I am assuming that these are current
streams, road, etc.?? Thank you very much.
As has been stated, you don't _need_ the various maps to use DeedMapper.
These maps are based on what is known today and _if_ any of the reference
points on the maps are changed from many years ago then the maps _could_ be
distracting when trying to match up land plots with where they should be
placed. On the other hand, even changed referenced points are usually not
far enough off that you would be led far astray. Some reference often helps
in land placement for the big picture.
As for which layers to obtain, I would suggest Stream, Road, and Rail at
least. As for Public Land, most of my plots do not occur in areas where
there are many Public Lands and thus I have never user that layer. But if
you are in such an area, that layer may be very useful
to you. Each layer give certain reference points (some possibly
changed from many years ago) and thus all three (four) layers together
provide a close resemblance of a printed sectional map that you would obtain
from the USC&GS. This then gives you a lot of help placing plots.
As I noted, a Public Land layer is not available for all areas. This also
applies to the other three layer to a lesser extent. But I suggest that you
get whatever is available for the are of your interest. If you aren't sure
which layers are available or which maps to get, contact Direct Line
Software at (617) 527-9566. They can tell you what you need. Map layers
are relatively cheap and are worth getting in my opinion.
Hope this helps -
