As you are probably aware, Google Earth has a two-part slider that
you to slide a marker on the left to the "start" date and another slider on
the right to the "end" date, to display everything in between. Their slider
also has left and right "step" buttons that allow you to click backward and
forward through date ranges, and it has a "settings" button that allows you
to manually type in specific date ranges rather than use the slider. This
sounds very similar to the functionality that is being discussed here, and I
would *love* to see some implementation like this in DeedMapper! I would
chose Steve's option "b" for implementation, which would separate this
functionality from the existing filters.
Rather than a slider and stepper kind of functionality, I'm thinking a single new
"As of date" filter would meet the needs of most users. It would be positioned
on the toolbar for easy access and would make use of a new sale date
keyword. Type in a year and the filter will show you who owned property as
of that date.
In the past, I have exported DeedMapper MBL files as KML for use with
Earth, and have gone back and manually filled the "end date" field for each
patent/deed (currently all end dates are the same as the start dates). This
work was lost the next time I made changes in DeedMapper and exported again
to KML, so again, I would *love* to see a "sale" date field incorporated
into the next version of DeedMapper.
If you are compiling a list of proposed features, I have a few additional
suggestions that I may or may not have made here publicly before. Such a
list should be on a new thread (if you agree), but one that immediately
comes to mind is the addition of a "Display Owners" button on the toolbar
along with the other display options (corners, lines, & area), and removing
the mutual exclusivity from these display options. If the screen becomes
too cluttered, users could always turn the "owners" display off again--but
this display option would be very useful for me at times when trying to
Yes, there will be more flexibility in terms of the Display menu showing owners
along with corners, lines, etc.
