I don't like the topo maps for the same reasons you mentioned, but
unfortunately Steve doesn't have maps of some of the areas that I need so
I'm forced to use them. Your email reminded me of something I saw a few
days ago that I meant to post to the list.
I noticed on the usgs.gov
site recently that they say they are going to
start publishing old topo maps as far back as 1884. Here's the notice:
. I've not seen topo
maps that old so my hope is that they won't be so detailed as the more
recent ones. They definitely won't be showing all of the modern roads!
According to the release they should be out mid-2011 which is right now...

I'm curious what everyone else is doing about naming roads and
map background, at least as far as in maps to be published in some form.
I'm using backgrounds purchased from Steve.
I don't really like the topo maps but I see the value in showing the
terrain, especially in the mountains and steep hills. And the roads and
creeks are named although it's hard to pick them out in the terrain lines
some cases. So far I have named only the three main creeks and no roads.
I'm justifying it by thinking people can compare the map to a real map to
figure out exactly where their particular tract is located today.
I would really like to hear opinions and recommendations!
