I thought I had included all of the sites mentioned in this thread!
I downloaded the USAPhotoMaps software and played with it a bit. It's a somewhat
unusual program in terms of operation, a kind of "kitchen sink" of capabilities,
right that you can tell it to load up the topo maps for a particular area and then you
click to define the corners of a "Big JPG" file for it to write out. The file
measured 7000 x 4400
pixels and included portions of several different topos, all seamless.
1. The topos are not oriented with north perfectly at the top. I don't consider this
be very serious, but it may be an issue for some users.
2. It downloads topo data in small square chunks, filling your display monitor. For one
of my three test cases, some of the chunks didn't download, which left holes in the
