The Daniel DNA Project has been officially launched. After reviewing the services
offered by several testing providers, it was determined that Family Tree DNA would be the
best choice. Their web site is www.familytreedna.com
. As a family project, we have been
given a substantial discount from the normal price. FTDNA has a very informative FAQ page
on this web site.
This project will use Y chromosome testing to determine the relationship between
men with the surname of Daniel, Daniels, Daniell, Dannel, etc. Since the Y chromosome is
passed father to son, only Daniel, etc., males will be candidates for testing.
It was decided to proceed with this project because the lack of records has, for
decades, prevented identifying relationships between the many Daniel, Daniels, Daniell,
Dannel, etc. families of America. For this reason, it has also been difficult for many
researchers to connect to known family lines. The same lack of records has prevented the
majority of lines from proving descent from European families, even though a great deal of
money and time has been spent in the attempt. This lack of records is not something that
any amount of research or conjecture will remedy. DNA testing IS the remedy. By building a
database of DNA from various lines in America and Europe, it will likely now be possible
to resolve these problems and aid future generations of researchers.
To assist in the sharing of information among participants, and to inform potential
participants, a temporary web site and a RootsWeb mailing list have been created.
The Daniel DNA web site is currently hosted by an entity that makes it's profit
by selling advertising in the form of banners and pop-up ads. A request for space on
RootsWeb will be made when their upgrade is finished and they are accepting such requests
again. The content will then be moved there. This web site is under development. The URL

All Daniel men are welcome to join us in the effort to untangle the families of
Daniel and variant surname spellings in America and Europe. Cost for one individual's
testing may be shared by family groups. Not being the Daniel male I had to get a Daniel
cousin to be tested for my line so some of you may need to do the same.
