Welcome to the real world, Ruth. <grin> Why do you think it has been
so hard for me to find my Georgia DANIEL ancestors? <grin>
"Cumpy" Sherman and his boys, like Slocum, burned everything in
Washington, Jefferson, Burke, most coastal SC counties and just about
anything else along the railroad tracks from Atlanta to Savannah and
Savannah to Charleston and Columbia. What they did not burn during
1864/1865, the "white trash," who lived in these counties, did later. .
They say, the only things longer than the "supply trains" coming into
Atlanta (to support his Army of the Tennessee) were the "booty trains"
headed north. Why do you think our Georgia DANIEL ancestors were so "po"
after the war? <grin>
Slocum's troops even stole the silver service from the Presbyterian
church in Madison, GA, even though he did return it, much later. Over in
Charleston they even stole the locks of hair one of the RIVERS girls had
saved after their mother's death in 1862. According to these RIVERS
descendents, the Yankee thought it would "make a good whip for their horse,"
as the story goes.
Granted, Andersonville was an abomination but what Sherman's troops did
to GA and SC would have been a war crime, today. Also remember, Capt. Henry
WIRZ was hung for what happened at Andersonville, GA. It was also not
really his fault and he was nothing but a scapegoat for WINDER who had died
at the end of the war.

Subject: [DANIEL-L] Washington Co., GA Records
I was very disappointed yesterday to find out while at the local
History Center - that Washington Co., GA records were distroyed by Fire in
1855 and also listed it was set afire during Sherman's march to the sea. Is
Does anyone know if any Daniel records for Washington Co., GA exist - or
do any of
you have a Washington Co. Daniel in your line? I'm looking for a
White Daniel Male over 55 in 1830 - so, he would have been born before 1775.
Would have died between 1830 - 1835. He was listed with Alexander Daniel in
the 1830 Washington Co. census.
Thanks - Ruth in Portland, OR
