We have been discussing, from time to time, the Chesley DANIEL Esq., who
was of Granville County, NC, who had graduated from the University of NC,
who was an attorney, who married Eliza WEIGHTMAN of Washington, DC on 9 May
1811 in Raleigh, NC and then a Susan C. FORD ABT 04 Feb 1825 in SC and who
lived in Marion, Marion County, SC. Some say he died in or around 1828 or
so in SC.
Personally, I feel Gen. Beverly DANIEL, son of Chesley DANIEL and Judith
Woodson CHRISTIAN, as the story goes, was his brother. Gen DANIEL was US
Marshall for NC and died in Raleigh, NC in 1840. This matches up very
closely with the fact he followed H. Thomas EVANS and Jane Beverly DANIEL
to Marion, SC -- or they followed him, whichever the case may have been.
Regardless, they were all part of the same family. Jane would have been his
niece and Martha Julia DANIEL, Jane's mother, his older sister.
I think the other Chesley DANIELS that floated around Granville were
children of Josiah and Elizabeth KEY -- Chesley's aunt uncle and brother of
his father, Chesley DANIEL, Sr. To distinguish these two Chesley's from
Josiah's Chesley's, I am going to refer to them as Chesley I and Chesley II
and Josiah's Chesley's as Chesley; Sr and Chesley, Jr.
So here is how I see them
Chesley DANIEL I and Judith Woodson Christian:
xi. Chesley DANIEL II (ABT 1776-ABT 1828)
+ Eliza WEIGHTMAN
+ Susan C. FORD
Josiah DANIEL and Elizabeth KEY:
ix. Chesley DANIEL, Sr. (1780-?)
+ Nancy SIMMS
However, there is another Chesley DANIEL floating around in the same
time frame. This Chesley was supposedly born in 1777, died in 1822 and is
listed by one person as the son of John Minor DANIEL and Elizabeth MORTON.
I do not know anything more about this Chesley DANIEL but information does
indicate there is the possibility this Chesley may be one of the other two
Chesley's I have already mentioned or he could be a 3rd Chesley DANIEL who
was born in the 1780 time frame.
I also have a Chesley C. DANIEL who I know is related to my bunch in
Burke and Jefferson County, GA. In 1850 he is married to an Anne and he is
age 32 which gives him a DOB of ABT 1818 and census information indicates he
was born in GA. In 1850 he and Anne (b. ABT 1817 in GA) have the following
children: Robert B. DANIEL, age 12, S. Adeline DANIEL, age 9, Virginia
DANIEL, age 6, and Mary A. DANIEL, age 3.
If you have any information on any of these Chesley's I would like to see
it, especially documents which list the names of children or wives. I am
not too much interested in the research of others because there are all too
many errors in this bunch to rely on anything done by others as relates to
John R. Clarke
