OK, lets revisit this Chesley mess and take into consideration the "Granville
Guardian Account" data supplied by Mike. It should be noted that Nancy Simms, Agnes
Williams and Lucy Noblin have all been, at one time, assigned to the same Chesley. There
were sufficient discrepancies in that assignment to try to sort these gals out. That has
been my purpose. Payne
1. (My first assumption) The Chesley Daniel who married Agness Williams was the son of
Josiah Daniel and Elizabeth Key, not Elizabeth Jordan.
Answer: The Elizabeth Key bit is true but this Chesley was a Chisley and he died too soon
to marry Agnes Williams. According to the book on "Josiah Daniel" in the
possession of Dr. Thomas Manning Daniel of Smithfield, NC., Chisley Daniel died on
Saturday 12 October 1814. He would not then be the husband of one Lucy Noblin, marriage
date of 5 July 1826. And, it is probable that Agness Williams was the wife of Chesley
Daniel the son of Joseph Daniel and Milly, and that Chesley had two sons, William and
Richard. It should also be noted that Josiah refers to his son as Chisley and not Chesley
while reference to Agnes Williams refer to her husband as Chesley.
From the Will of Joseph Daniel: "to grandsons William, Richard
Daniel, sons of Chesley Daniel, land adjoining Wm. Stampers known as "Burdens."
It is suggested that Chesley may have been deceased before his father's will of 1819,
because he is not enumerated in the will. Further, as to Chesley who married Agnes,
consider the following Granville guardian account entry:
(from Mike's Research)
421 thru 423 Feb Ct. 1823 - NATHANIEL WILLIAM DANIEL & JOSEPH RICHARD DANIEL,
orphans of CHESLEY DANIEL, deceased, by AGNES DANIEL, guardian for orphans lists land of
300 acres willed them by their father and three negroes, which is to become property of
the survivor if either die under age or without issue. This property came into my hands in
1819 and negroes in 1820. Account of guardian from Dec 18, 1819 charges orphans with
tuition paid to
Miss POLLY HARRIS, GEO CLARK for tuition, books, clothes, taxes, clerk's fee for
guardian bond and cash received for them from JOSEPH DANIEL for rent of land from Jan
1820. I live with my father in his house with my children, and my father is not inclined
to charge any board for us so there is no charge against estate of orphans.
This all suggests that this CHESLEY was the son who was referred to only by his son's
names WILLIAM and RICHARD in the 1819 will of JOSEPH DANIEL (wife MILLY) when referring to
his grandsons. Probable also that AGNES DANIEL was AGNES WILLIAMS.
Now, who do the following children belong to?
Richard Sanford /Daniel/
Lucious Tucker /Daniel/
William Henry /Daniel/
Now for an asprin break! Payne
