I am researching the family of Isham John DANIEL, b. 1829 in Sumter County, AL. He married
on 30 Mar 1848 in Sumter County, Alabama to Mary Ann RAINEY, b. abt 1830 in either GA or
AL. They appear on the 1850 census for Intercourse, Sumter, AL, page 345 along with one
child, Eugenie (sic) DANIEL, age 10/12. Isham DANIEL may have had a brother, Samuel D.
DANIEL, b. 1822 in NC, who shows up in the 1850 census on page 344. I have no other
information regarding Isham John DANIEL or the RAINEY family.
Eugene DANIEL is my 2G grandfather. He married Susannah "Shannie" Tweed
WITHERSPOON. They had six children: Mary "Mamie", b. abt 1873; Elizabeth, b.
1875, d. 1910; Henrietta "Rhetta" (my G grandmother), b. abt 1878, d. Mar 1961;
John Witherspoon, b. abt 1881, d. 1941; Roberta "Bob" M., b. 7 Mar 1883, d. Jun
1965; Nancy "Shan", b. abt 1890.
Eugene Daniel became a minister in the Presbyterian Church. He was ordained in 1871. In
1882 he received an Honorary Degree in Divinity from Southwestern Presbyterian Theological
College, now Rhodes College, in Memphis, TN. At this time he was residing in Fernandina,
Florida. By 1890-1891 he was the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Memphis. Eugene is
listed in the 1898 Directory of Presbyterian Ministers as living in Raleigh, NC. According
to the 1930 Census he was living in Eatonton, Putnam County, GA, which is where he later
died on 14 Jan 1935.
I cannot seem to get any further back on the DANIEL side of my family. I have a lot of
information on the WITHERSPOON line. Does anyone recognize this family? I know that there
were other DANIELs in the Sumter County AL area that do not appear to be related, but I am
not sure about this.
