In a recent expose in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as well as a
book written by Steve Oney of the AJC about the lynching of Leo FRANK in
Cobb County, GA in 1915, one of the names listed as one of the lieutenants
in this group was a George DANIELL, Jeweler.
I am very interested in this George DANIELL, not because of this
infamous act, but because of his profession. As most know, I have more than
several links to the Marietta, Cobb County, GA area and my RICHTER family
were in the jewelry and mercantile business in Madison, Morgan County, GA, a
similar profession to that which this George was involved.
Seeing some of the names listed in this expose, which included that of
former Governor Joe BROWN, is also interesting since my grandfather, John
RICHTER, and grand uncle, Martin L. RICHTER, went to school at Georgia
Military Institute in Marietta with BROWN's sons in the latter years of the
Civil War. However, I saw no other family names listed in this group of
"organizers, lieutenants and foot soldiers."
While most may think this FRANK lynching was conducted by a white-trash
mob led by a bunch of "kluckers", this was not true. This act was led and
conducted by many of Georgia's elite and included some of the best-known
political figures of both Cobb and Fulton County, GA.
Knowing the devastation faced by my DANIEL family, as well as others, in
the last several years of Civil War, I would not be in the least surprised
if some of them were not a part of it. I am sure other families held an
equal resentment towards anything Northern or Jewish but I think this was
something brought about more so by the fact that FRANK was a Yankee, than
the fact he was Jewish.
A list of the persons involved in this can be found in several articles on
