I was looking through various families that found their way to Barbados
and Bermuda with links back to the mainland and happened upon the
CHAMBERLAIN and PROCTOR families. As most know who follow the Robert
DANIELL family of Charleston, both of these families are collateral, or
there are those who think they are collateral, with this DANIELL family.
Something I have known for a long time -- there were many ties in these
overall families between the "islands," Charleston and New England. A
theory that some seem to doubt and there are even those who are drastically
opposed to such blasphemy.
Take for example the family of Thomas CHAMBERLAIN (1639-1719) and Sarah
PROCTOR (b. 1646) of Chelmsford, MA. They were married in 1666 in
Chelmsford, MA. Sarah was the d/o a Robert PROCTOR and a Judith HILDRITH.
Thomas and Sarah also had a daughter named, Dorothy who some in this family
say was born in 1675 but one cannot always trust these dates.
We know that Gov. Robert DANIELL and his wife, Dorothy, some say
CHAMBERLAIN, had a child named, Robert DANIELL and Judith DANIELL. We also
know that Thomas's older brother, Job CHAMBERLAIN, died in Dorchester, SC.
A link, I would not bet against it especially since Robert DANIELL, Jr.
married a Sarah PROCTOR.
Another interesting feature in all of this is the WAINWRIGHT family of
both Barbados and Bermuda was all over this family. I have never believed
for a second that Robert DANIELL's second wife, a Martha WAINWRIGHT, was
just some country gal that Gov. DANIELL seduced during his stay in NC as
military governor of that part of the Carolina colony. I had to believe she
was probably from within his inner circle of friends, which included the
CHAMBERLAINS, PROCTORS, et. al.
Now that is settled, guess who the mother of Robert PORCTOR was? How
about a Sarah FLETCHER. This throws a whole new family into the equation,
doesn't it? I also think the RIVERS family of James Island, SC may also
have been in this little group, too, because they came from Bermuda in about
the same time frame and some of this family also went to Southside, VA along
with a TATUM family of Barbados, and also Bermuda, that migrated into VA in
the same time frame. A family, we also know was collateral with the
What I really found interesting was the WAINWRIGHT, TATUM and CHEW
connections in NJ. In case you have forgotten, Chesley DANIEL, Esq. (ABT
1780-1828) of Raleigh, NC married Eliza Pratt WEIGHTMAN of Alexandria, VA
and guess who her mother was? An Elizabeth CHEW of Maryland.
I do where this is leading but I think we may find out these DANIEL and
DANIELL families were not all that far from these families. I also think
there is possibly a lot of miss-aligned DANIEL and DANIELL lines in all of
this, something I think DNA tests will help to unravel.
