I know that although she was the Founder of the PTA, I understand
that both Birney daughters of your kinswoman, Alice Josephine McClellan
White Birney, married German nationals: Catherine, in particular, married
Baron Albrecth Von Schoen. Do you know what became of her; did she live out
her life in Germany as a Baroness. I ask because I came upon pair of Opal
earrings which I was told belonged to a Catherine, Baroness Von Schoen, from
just after WWI and I wondered if that was the Catherine Birney pictured in
the famous PTA image of the Founder with her daughters.
Your kinswoman's grandfather-in-law, James G. Birney, has been
described by my folks as a "rabid" abolitionist and her husband, Theodore
Weld Birney, was named for that grandfather's close abolitionist friend,
Theodore Weld, who was the spouse of Angelina Grimke herself... as in "The
Grimke Sisters of South Carolina" by Catherine Hoffman Birney...they all
traveled in that circle. Though later, a descendent of James G. Birney ,
married a Sarah Booth of Maryland, a kinswoman of that notorious theatrical
family written of in "The Mad Boorths of Maryland?" The phone company is
right when they say "we are all connected"
