Page 17 of the 1800 Oglethorpe Co, Ga census record has both Nancy Payton and James
Chesley seems to be an indicator name for the Daniel family like Valentine is for the
Payton family. I don;t know which Chesley but I know that one of the James had a brother
Chesley. I think it is the James, brother of Josiah but am not sure.
It is said by other Payton researchers that my Payton line is from Stafford,Va, but I am
just not sure. The more I research, the more I find holes in that logic.
My Mayfield line seems to have intermarried with the Daniel line as well, and Valentine
Mayfield is found in Granville County, NC and then later his son Philemon (Philip), his
sons Philemon (Philip) and Smith are in Coweta Georgia in 1840. Philemon is also on the
1800 Oglethorpe Co census but on another page from Nancy Payton and James Daniel.
Peter Daniel (born Va, died Boone Co, Ky) married Jane Mayfield, niece of Valentine
Mayfield found in Granville.
I know you can help me straighten out this mess. It all started out when I saw the name
Chesley on the Payton pedigree and wondered where it could have come from. As I said, the
Daniel line is full of the name Chesley and as I followed the Chesley Daniel trail I found
one in Granville where my Mayfields were as well and what with the Mayfield/Daniel
connection I knew I was on the right track somehow. And, then there was James Daniel as a
neighbor of Nancy Payton who had a grandson Chesley so I picked up on that and began
researching Daniel and Granville, NC as well.
I am not that far into my reserach that I can quote chapter and verse of the Daniel family
like you can, but I am sure you can get me there.
